Shotstack

Shotstack

Shotstack is a cloud video editing engine driven by software. You send a JSON edit — clips, text, audio, effects on a timeline — and it renders the finished MP4, image or audio file in parallel, firing a webhook when it's done. SDKs for Node.js, Python, PHP and Ruby, plus an MCP server and CLI, let AI agents or your backend build videos programmatically. Beyond rendering, it bundles generative AI into the render itself: text-to-image, short video clips, ElevenLabs voice-overs and music, billed per model. Workflows adds a no-code visual builder to chain media APIs and providers like OpenAI, Stability, HeyGen and D-ID without writing SDK glue. The source-available Studio SDK lets you embed a white-label editor inside your own product. Built for developers, marketers and product teams producing thousands of templated, personalized or data-driven videos — bulk real estate listings, sports highlight reels, localized content — without wrestling FFmpeg or maintaining render infrastructure.

Everything worth knowing about Shotstack

The complete picture — from everyday features to the technical detail builders and IT folks dig for.

Core features

What it actually does

Visual Workflow Builder
Drag-and-drop canvas to wire up media workflows—from file conversion and watermarking to multi-step generative AI video pipelines—without writing a line of code.
Bulk Video Templates with Merge Fields
Design a video template with placeholders like {{NAME}}, then render a unique video for every record in a CSV or dataset. One template, thousands of outputs.
Built-in Generative AI
Text-to-image, text-to-speech, and a GPT-4 text generator ship natively—no separate sign-up. Also plugs into OpenAI, Stability AI, HeyGen, ElevenLabs and D-ID.
White-Label Video Editor SDK
Embed the full Studio timeline editor inside your own product with your own toolbar and layout. Source-available under a PolyForm Shield License.
Creative Asset Distribution
Deliver finished renders through Shotstack's CDN or push directly to AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Mux.
Technical capabilities
JSON-Driven Edit API
An edit is a JSON description of clips, text, audio and effects on a timeline. The API renders it in the cloud in parallel and fires a webhook when each render completes.
Ingest API with Transcription
Upload source footage, get automatic transcoding and speech-to-text transcription before it enters your workflow.

n8n video automation with the official Shotstack node
Get the workflow and the template: https://shotstack.io/learn/n8n-video-automation/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=n8n-node-guide Shotstack now has an official node for n8n, built by Shotstack and verified by n8n. This video shows what the node does, follows one customer review through a real workflow, and sets that workflow up in your own n8n. The node replaces the HTTP Request, Wait and IF setup. You pick an action from a list, and your API key lives in one credential. Get Render Status holds the workflow until the render is done. Get Asset by Render ID returns a permanent link. There are eight actions in three groups: Render, Asset and Generation. An n8n AI Agent can also use the node as a tool. The example workflow turns a review form into a vertical testimonial video. It adds the video link to a Google Sheet and shows the customer a thank-you page with the link. Setup in this video: 1. Install the node from the nodes panel (owner or admin) 2. Add your API key as a credential, with the environment set to Production 3. Save the testimonial template to your Shotstack account 4. Import the workflow and pick your template in Render Template 5. Connect a Google Sheet with the seven columns, and set Mapping Column Mode to Map Automatically Then publish the workflow and share the form link. How to render and automate videos with Shotstack
One listing video, rendered from 34 lines of JSON. Then the same design rendered for every row in a sheet, with no one touching it again. This guide makes a first render with Shotstack and then automates it. If you write code, you'll see every request. If you'd rather not, you'll see the same steps done by an AI agent (the MCP server or the CLI), in Studio with Director, and in n8n, Make and Zapier. Automate product videos on a schedule with Node.js and Shotstack

Tutorial2:26
Automate product videos on a schedule with Node.js and Shotstack
Every new product in your store gets its own video, on a schedule. This walkthrough shows the whole workflow: a small Node script, cron, and the Shotstack API. Full guide, with all the code: https://shotstack.io/learn/automate-video-creation-on-a-schedule/ How it works: - A feed lists your products. Each product has an ID, a title and up to four photos. - One saved template turns any product into a video through merge fields. - The script sends one render request per new product and saves the link to the hosted video. - A history file records each product ID before rendering, so a re-run never makes a duplicate. - Cron runs the script every hour. A lock stops two runs from overlapping. - A webhook reports when a video is ready. If no webhook arrives, the script checks the render itself after 15 minutes. No database. No packages to install. What's great
  • Render thousands of videos in parallel via cloud API
  • Visual no-code workflow builder for non-developers
  • Built-in AI models: text-to-image, TTS, GPT-4, video
  • White-label Studio editor embeddable in your product
  • Well-documented API, first render in under 10 minutes
Technical strengths
  • MCP server, CLI and Director enable agentic video editing
  • JSON edit schema is portable across API, Studio and templates
  • Webhook-driven async renders with CDN or BYO storage delivery
Where it falls short
  • Credit system is confusing and opaque
  • 1080p cap on cheaper tiers; 4K locked to Pro+
  • White-label editor is source-available, not fully open
  • Lavish marketing copy inflates the 87% faster claim
Technical limitations
  • AI generation billed per model on top of minutes
  • Minutes round down by the second, so short clips still cost
  • Storage and bandwidth capped per plan (5GB floor)
