Regal Fish reels in 25% growth in bid to become the UK's biggest online fishmonger
Regal Fish, the 40-year-old direct-to-consumer seafood specialist, has grown revenue by 25% year-to-date after replatforming to BigCommerce, building on a 27% rise in 2025 as it targets becoming the UK's biggest online fishmonger. The brand has delivered fresh and frozen seafood to British doorsteps for four decades through a call-centre and van-delivery model, offering roughly 200 varieties of responsibly sourced fish with next-day delivery. But its original website functioned as little more than a brochure, prompting the move to a modern ecommerce platform. Hani Girgis, ecommerce manager at Regal Fish, said: "Since moving to BigCommerce, we've achieved high growth numbers, and a key part of that was increasing average order value. We wouldn't have been able to do that without BigCommerce." The retailer, part of Japanese seafood group Nissui, now runs its consumer storefront and a new wholesale channel from the same platform, using native upsell and cross-sell tools to lift basket sizes — capabilities its previous site couldn’t offer. Steve Stansfield, CEO of Regal Fish, said the overhaul reflects changing shopping habits: "If we look at the younger generations coming through, their mindset is they order it today, they want it tomorrow. When they decide on a Thursday what they want for dinner on a Friday, can they have seafood the same way. That's our ambition." With growth on track, the Nissui-backed plan is to replicate the model in markets around the world.

  • Pricing plans can be confusing with complex tier structures and add-on costs.
Technical limitations
  • Native checkout, while optimized, offers less design control than fully headless or Shopify Plus solutions.
  • Some core features (like advanced B2B or multi-storefront) are locked behind higher-tier Enterprise plans.
