What file types can I upload?

PDF, Word (.doc/.docx), PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx), Markdown (.md), and plain text (.txt). You can also paste text, links, or hand it a YouTube URL.

Which model powers ChatPDF?

It dynamically routes queries between GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini — fast/cheap for simple lookups, heavier model for complex reasoning. No Claude or Gemini in the mix.

How does the API handle conversation state?

It doesn't. The /v1/chats/message endpoint is stateless — you resend all prior user/assistant turns each request, capped at 6 messages and 2,500 OpenAI tokens before older turns get dropped.

Can I get page-level citations programmatically?

Yes. Set referenceSources: true and the response returns inline [P ] markers plus a references array with pageNumber entries. Pair with stream: true for token-by-token output.

SSL in transit, encrypted at rest on a SOC2 Type II certified provider, and you can delete documents anytime. Default is private; sharing is opt-in via revocable links.
